Best PC Game of the Year

This year’s crop of computer games was fairly thin in major title releases, as budgetware and niche titles were mostly what were representative of quality fare. However, there were enough great titles to ensure that at the very least, the best games would be memorable.

The Nominees

BioShock

Ken Levine’s terrifying spiritual sequel to System Shock 2, set deep in the ocean in an underwater city gone berserk

Call of Duty 4

Infinity Ward takes the Call of Duty to the Middle Eastof the modern age, with an engaging multiplayer mode as part of the package

Crysis

Crytek’s state-of-the-art graphics enhance the wide open gameplay and devious AI in this gorgeous shooter

Supreme Commander

Chris Taylor’s followup to his classic Total Annihilation brings back frantic real-time strategy with tons of units

World in Conflict

Massive Entertainment’s alternate reality “tactical RTS” features hot graphics and two-tiered strategy

And the Winner is:

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was released on multiple platforms, but it is on the PC where it shone the brightest, with high resolution graphics and a robust online community, rivalled only to Xbox Live’s. While the single player campaign was short, it was jam packed full of cinematic action. The multiplayer, with its rankings and minor RPG elements more than made up for the brief solo campaign, and the inclusion of the Arcade mode, in which players scored points for shooting enemies, with a limited number of “lives”, was a keen addition.

Runner Up: World in Conflict

World in Conflict was an exceptional real-time strategy game, not only featuring gorgeous destructible environments and detailed characters, but a brilliant strategy akin to Massive Entertainment’s prior RTS Ground Control.

Jonah Falcon’s Best PC Game of the Year: World in Conflict

Jonathon Howard’s Best PC Game of the Year: BioShock

Where was?

Jonah Falcon: Out of the Park Baseball 2007. Yes, I know it’s a text-based sports simulation, but, by golly, it’s the PC game I probably waste the most time on. I would have said Heroes of Might & Magic V, but that was released last year and it doesn’t run well on my laptop anyway.

Jonathon Howard: The Orange Box. Um, why wasn’t this nominated? 3 of the best games to come out this year, and all in one package? The Orange Box has something for everyone, Team Fortress 2 for your team based on-line play, Portal for everyone, and the latest Half-Life 2 episode! [Because it's bundleware, and it's hard to allow other games this year to compete with the classic Half-Life 2. - Ed.]
