Assassin’s Creed Movie? Not Really

Ubisoft, French developer of many popular games including the Prince of Persia and Splinter Cell series, is planning on taking its next big game to the big screen (sort of).
One of the most anticipated games of the “next gen,” Assassin’s Creed, is being developed by Ubisoft into an 8 minute “movie” in a brand new studio set to be built in Montreal, Canada.
With 500 new jobs expected to be created by the studio alone, it seems clear that Ubisoft has much more planned for the future than this 8 minute feature.
“We want our universe to be respected.” Ubisoft spokesman Emmanuel Carré explained. “Too often, the movies made from video games don’t respect the characters. The producers want to make a mainstream movie, but if the fans decide it’s not good, the movie won’t be a success. With our new studio, the same people making the games will be working closely with the people making the films.”
Found in the original article written by the International Herald Tribune is the revelation that the purpose behind the studio is to create “interactive movies, allowing viewers to control the action rather than passively absorb a linear plot.” The control would be through viewer editing and manipulation of the content.
It certainly sounds ambitious, but don’t expect to see their work popping up in your local theater any time soon (or ever) - the plan is to distribute it over the internet, Xbox Live, and other untraditional outlets.
I have a feeling this kind of content will ultimately end up as an extra on the collector’s editions of Ubisoft games. However, this is an excellent step forward towards the development of entertaining and respected film adaptations of video games.
