PS3 Background Downloading: No “True BD”

Inner Bits is reporting on information that firmware version 1.6 for the PS3 will allow users to utilize background downloading from the Sony Online Store. However, as Bill Clinton will tell you, your satisfaction with this may depend on what your definition of “background” is.
For Xbox Live users, background downloading means setting your 360 to download anything from games, demos, videos, and other content and then diving into a game (offline) or movie while the downloads continue.
Sony’s version of it, however, appears to be limited to dabbling in the Cross Media Bar (XMB). The information so far is sparce, but it sounds like downloading will be stopped once a game is started. Whether this includes Blu-Ray movies, demos, and downloaded games such as flOw remains unclear.
This improvement over the current download system is certainly welcome, but it falls far short of what should have been included in the first firmware version, something I will call “True BD.” Admittedly, Sony has been good with updating the system quickly and often, so this will buy them some time. But it better be nothing more than a temporary solution while they figure how to implement True BD.
