Among other huge news that Sony announced in their GDC keynote was the theory of Game 3.0. Phil Harrison mentions that with Web 2.0 we saw the development of a community, and user-created content. Game 3.0 represents the integration of online consoles and communities, as well as YouTube-like user generated content.
As one of the pioneering games of this new generation of gaming, Harrison announced a game titled LittleBigPlanet. The game, is fairly simple, and is heavily physics based. Down to it’s roots, the game is a simple 3D graphics meets 2D gameplay side scroller. But the way you play the game is much more innovative. Rather than figuring out the exact way the developer’s interpretation on completing the level, you can figure out many different paths of completion through the game’s physics engine.
What really is impressive though, is the potential for user generated content. Gamers will be able to create and upload their own levels for people all over the world to check out and rate. Similar to YouTube, it will give us a list of the top picks and highest rated levels.
