5.5 Million PS3s to be Sold in 2007? Hi-Def Formats Becoming More Popular?

Vito Mandato, an “executive consultant” to Paramount Home Entertainment, estimates that 1.2 million stand-alone HD-DVD players will be sold in 2007 along with 500,000 Xbox 360 add-on drives. For Blu Ray, he estimates 5.5 million PS3s will be sold (the original article strangely does not account for stand-alone Blu Ray players). Also of interest is his suggestion that 22% of PS3 owners “purchase movies regularly.”
Mandato offered this and all sorts of additional information on the high definition format war during this year’s DisplaySearch Flat Panel Display Conference (yeah, I’ve never heard of it either).
The general opinion on the war was that it will not be over in 2007. However, two interesting facts were revealed:
- Stand-alone high definition players (i.e. not the PS3) account for nearly twice (8%) the market share from last quarter when compared to overall DVD player sales
- January 2007 saw the PS3 dollar sales surpass sales for standard DVD players
We’ll continue to monitor the high definition format war and the PS3/360’s impact on it.

5.5M? When? 2010? First you have to sell the ones on the shelves first.

Sure people are buying Blu-ray dics with the PS3. Why? Cause there is currently only two worthy games on the system, RFOM, and Motorstorm. Niether one of these games outshines anything on 360. Sony burned everyone (including themselves)when they over-promised and under-delivered on thier system. I own a PS3 that I play PS2 games on, and seeing how I have a HDTV but not a 1080p one I don’t have any Blu-ray discs. I didn’t buy a PS3 for movies, I bought for the same reason I bought my 360, great games. So far I am not impressed. Sony is in trouble and they won’t admit it. The should be working hard on making sure the have more games and better support for developers, not on stealing ideas from The Sims and Second Life, haven’t they learned anything from the SIXAXIS controller.
