“We Think It’s a Bad Idea”

The response Microsoft and Nintendo have to PlayStation Home. They’re not really fond of the idea. Why? Perhaps its a defensive posture against an idea that might just work? Top that off with a bit of side-scroller magic in LittleBigPlanet and you’ve got a few hot & positive PS3 stories for the week - not the norm for Sony. The Nintendo response about Home:
“This is an example of Sony’s ‘Mii-too’ approach,” said a Nintendo spokesperson to ComputerAndVideoGames.com. “But as Mr. Miyamoto states, Nintendo years ago considered and rejected the type of approach Sony is now taking.”
Years ago Nintendo considered networking? It’s 2007 and they’re still not fully networked in a community atmosphere. WTF Nintendo? Sounds like a grade school response to an idea they didn’t think of “yeah, we thought about that but decided it sucks.”
Of course, Microsoft had something to say as well…
“I think they’ve definitely taken some concepts that we originated like achievements, but I think they’re pushing in a different direction and we’ve sort of fundamentally got two different approaches going on here.
I think theres is very much a vision that people see it and it looks cool but it’s fundamentally separate from the games - or at least what they’ve shown so far,” Satchell continued. “It’s a cool world but it’s like a little game by itself. Our approach is the other way around; it’s that games are the center and that’s the star of the show, that’s what people buy the console for.”
Sony finally put out a bit of news which got a response from their competitors! Both people do not agree with the Second Life genre to sell a console with the “but WAIT, there’s more!” approach Sony is moving towards.
Nintendo has gone the route of the “pfft” approach while Microsoft simply says “wouldn’t be how we’d do it even though…you did copy us.” Does that mean Sony is on to something? Would you buy a console just for PlayStation Home or would you rather have one or two great Sony exclusives?

Microsoft tried it over a decade ago - it was called Bob.

Um, Bob doesn’t look or act anything like Home
“Microsoft Bob was a Microsoft software product, released in March 1995, which provided a new, nontechnical interface to desktop computing operations.”
Bob was supposed to dumb down Windows more than it already was. PlayStation home is a ‘game’ not an ‘interface’ - although it does have an interface in it

HOME is like a mix of IRC and GuildWars town chat.

It’s also a ripoff of Sierra Network, too.

O.K idea ( it’s just the SIMS ) but it’s not a system sellar, I personally wouldn’t even consider this when buying a PS3. How about focusing on good games and exclusives and making the online component much more tight?
Not a bad idea but definitely not a great idea either.

They sure made the video look good.
I would NEVER buy a PS3 but the home thing did look cool.

Sure it looked nifty … but there is no way … no way … no way you will get that kind of experience you saw there “over the internet”. What they were showing there with their “HD Movie Trailers” and such requires just too much bandwidth.
Get used to “Entering apartment. Please wait …. please keep waiting … still loading … please wait …”
