Rumor Stopper: 20GB PlayStation 3 – No Longer In Production

PS3 - select the one that fits you bestApparently, there is a rumor going around stating Sony isn’t producing 20GB PlayStation 3’s anymore. Evidence? You cannot find them in stores – only the 60GB counterpart.

Fact: Just because you don’t see them, doesn’t mean they’re not being made. Joystiq took some time to stop this rumor by simply asking Sony to explain the situation. They spoke with Dave Karraker, senior director of communications…

“The 20GB model of PS3 is available in North America, along with the 60GB model. While we make it available to retailers, they are the ones who ultimately place the order for what they want to sell, based on consumer demand. Overwhelmingly, retailers have been requesting the 60GB model, the mix has been about 80 percent 60GB, 20 percent 20GB retailer orders. So, the reason you might not be seeing the 20 GB is simply that retailers have been ordering more of the 60 GB unit.”

Basically, nobody cares about that crappy 20GB version. Sony only created it because Microsoft has a low end model, and frankly, the PS3 high-end is pretty costly. There are a few people that will take the plunge to get the lower-end PS3 model because they’re short on funds but want to experience the PS3.

Everyone else seems to save up to buy the “real” version of the console, 60GB in all its glory. Others just don’t buy the console at all (and that’s an entirely different issue.)
