Folding@home Lands on PS3 March 23

Folding@homeStanford University’s Folding@home project will be made available to Playstation 3 owners on March 23 to coincide with the European launch of the PS3. Presumably available through what will be Sony’s latest firmware update (v1.6), Folding@home allows PS3 owners to volunteer the unique processing power of the PS3 to aid in protein research. This effort is designed to further the scientific community’s understanding of diseases such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimers, Cystic Fibrosis, and many cancers.

I’ve personally been looking forward to this since it was first announced last year before the PS3’s launch. Although projects like this have been done before, this is the first such effort to be made using a video game console.

All PS3 owners should participate in this free project and I imagine many will. At the very least, users will be treated to a unique, real-time “screensaver” depicting the folding process. What’s even better is that the SixAxis controller can be used to interact with the on-screen depiction of the protein folding.

Regardless of where your gaming loyalties lie, all gamers should be supportive of this charitable project.
