Wii Dominates Sales…Again.

Nintendo dominates February sales yet again, bringing in more unit sales than any current-generation product. Actually, they also brought in more sales than any old-generation product as well.

On to the number breakdown:

  • Nintendo Wii: 335,000 units
  • PlayStation 2: 295,000 units
  • Xbox 360: 228,000 units
  • PlayStation 3: 127,000 units

Surprised at the numbers? Considering product availability it’s still odd to see Nintendo Wii beating out other consoles, but that’s probably why their hard to find (everyone is buying them).

Another PlayStation 2 chart breaker for Sony, ahead of Xbox 360… barely. Again, not a big surprise considering all the latest hot games are arriving for the PS2 console, not the PS3.

What about hand-helds? Sony finally catching up as they stated during the last NPD figures?

  • Nintendo DS: 485,000 units
  • Sony PSP: 176,000 units

They don’t seen to be doing a very good job at catch-up. At this rate, PlayStation 3 figures will be overtaking the PSP figures!

Sony’s reaction?

“According to NPD data, February 2007 showed a 67% increase in retail dollars generated year-over-year for SCEA in the US with total sales of $377 million. With this increase, the PlayStation brand remained the number-one revenue driver for the month in the industry owning 38.5% of total sales.”

If you count all products with the Sony label, they are indeed doing well. Most of this is contributed by the PlayStation 2 and its long reign. But they can indeed claim success from a global view of their product catalog.

Top games?

  • Crackdown (360): 427K
  • Wii Play with Remote (wii): 371K
  • Diddy Kong Racing (DS): 262K
  • Legend of Zelda: The Twilight Princess (wii): 130K
  • Guitar Hero 2 w/Guitar (PS2): 130K
  • Gears of War (360): 119K
  • Major League Baseball 2K7 (360): 113K
  • Lost Planet: Extreme Condition (360): 111K
  • Wario Ware Smooth Moves (wii): 109K
  • NBA Street Homecourt (360): 102k

Amazing to see Crackdown outselling all other products?

The Xbox sold 140K units. Think about that for a sec.

Why should I waste time thinking about something Microsoft pretends doesn’t exist? :)
I’d rather think about how the PlayStation 3 plans to ramp up sales. It’s more intriguing.

$600 still works? Good luck, Sony…good luck. Maybe, just maybe, consumers are not as stupid as you thought they’re. You can talk about cancer research all you want, but PS3 is a freaking electronic T-O-Y. Sorry to burst your bubble, Mr. Kutaragi.
