Joystiq is reporting that they received confirmation from a Best Buy employee stating that they are officially cancelling all of their orders for the 20GB version of the Playstation 3. It turns out that the USD $100 lower price point still wasn’t enough to get gamers to shell out their money for an inferior product to their premium model.
Joystiq was contacted by this employee and they later confirmed through several different retail locations that the 20GB version is indeed discontinued, at least by Best Buy. Sony PR head David Karraker admitted to joystiq:
Overwhelmingly, retailers have been requesting the 60GB model, the mix has been about 80 percent 60GB, 20 percent 20GB retailer orders.
Overall, not too surprising. The Core version of the 360 has been all but phased out among larger retailers, and it just makes sense from a consumer standpoint to purchase the premium edition of the PS3 as well.
