Launch vs Launch: PS3 Outselling 360 During 1st 4 Months

PS3 v 360Another day, another console sales comparison. This one comes from respected sales tracking firm NPD, where a “spokesman” supposedly said “figures show that the PS3 is selling slightly faster in the US than the Xbox 360 did at the same stage in its release.”

Assuming the underlying sales data is accurate, this information leads to all sorts of arguments interpreting what this means for the console wars. Is this data expected given the severe supply shortages for the 360 during its launch? Or does this information bode well for the PS3 due to the fact that it has managed these sales despite direct competition from the 360 and Wii during its launch? Does this show that consumers are willing to pay the PS3’s higher price? Or are these sales from just the die-hard fans and early adopters?

Regardless of what this means, the PS3 will live or die by the games it offers. I, for one, have yet to purchase a game (flOw excluded) and I’ve had the system since launch day 1. The clock is ticking…

  1. Jonah Falcon Says:

Forget the fact that there were 360 shortages during its launch, and the eBay prices for them were $1000-2000?

  2. Devin Grimes Says:

I think this is definitely due more to the production issues facing the 360. This time last year, you were lucky to even find a 360 in stores, and it was only really around May that you stood a chance of finding one…

  3. jonahfalcon Says:

360’s were going for $1000-$2500 on eBay due to shortage problems.

In the UK, PS3’s on eBay are CHEAPER than retail.

  4. Tom Says:

    Good, competition is good.

Why are there quotes around the word spokesman?

  5. jonahfalcon Says:

Because you don’t want to say “shill”. heh

  6. S Holmes Says:

There are quotes around spokesman to emphasize 1) the choice of word was not mine, and 2) the article gave no name or source which lent any reliability to the authenticity of the quote.

That said, I have no doubt the quote is true, I just wanted to make sure people knew that there is no name credited with this quote.
