Possible PS3 “Elite” On The Way?

Microsoft’s recent surge of publicity from their upcoming Elite SKU has had relatively mixed reviews. While it does add an increased functionality with an HDMI port, it still upset many of the current Xbox 360 owners, leaving them feeling more like beta testers.
Possibly feeling backed into a corner, it looks like Sony may be prepping a new SKU for the PS3, according to Kotaku’s Michael McWhertor. He dug up a contract between Sony and the US Federal Communications Commission to modify the existing Playstation 3.
The modifications listed in the contract are to alter the Bluetooth technology, and most importantly add a new model of the PS3, but with an 80 GB hard drive…and that’s it. It seems kind of fishy, considering it’s such a small incremental increase in size, especially considering you can replace your PS3’s hard drive with a standard one of the shelf…not a proprietary one like Microsoft requires you to do.
Sony responded to Kotaku’s reporting stating that:
Application to the FCC has been made with various possibilities in mind, however, it does not lead to a new product announcement at this time.
They aren’t completely ruling it out, but a revision to the console, at least at some point in time is inevitable. Maybe, if we’re lucky they’ll completely phase out the 20GB version, drop the 60GB version down to $499, and go with the new 80GB model as their premiere SKU.

I can see it - a Sony Elite costing a mere $800.
