EA Announces Guitar Hero II Competitor

Playin' in a garage rock bandElectronic Arts has started its own music label, and now it’s going after Red Octane’s Guitar Hero II with its own music game, Rock Band; this is similar to EA’s attempt to win over Tony Hawk’s dominated skating genre with skate. The hook: Rock Band will feature an entire band’s instruments, with a lead guitar, a bass guitar, a drum kit and a microphone. In addition, it’ll feature full online play.

Whew!

Since MTV owns the developer, Harmonix, the songs will not be covers but actual renditions by the actual artists, and, of course, future song packs will be downloadable for purchase.

The game will be available for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 for Holiday 2007.
