Guitar Hero 360 Whammy Bar Problems

Not 24 hours after the official release of Guitar Hero II for the Xbox 360 (although more than a few lucky rockers have had it for a few days), message boards are lighting up with reports of un-responsive whammy bars.
Some are reporting that there are two different guitars currently being used for the game and that the problems are associated with just one of them. The rumor suggests that the guitars with the pedal jack next to the power cord have the whammy problem (pictured at bottom in above link), whereas the guitars with the pedal jack on the bottom of the guitar (when stood on its end) are problem free (pictured on top in above link).
Keep in mind that there is disagreement over whether there even is a problem, as many are reporting that their whammy is totally sweet. But one thing is for sure, there is lots of smoke – and where there’s smoke there’s usually fire. We’ll just have to wait to see if the smoke is from a whammy problem or 360 owners finally thrashing to Guitar Hero.

My local target couldn’t sell any of the extra controllers as they were showing up as “Recalled” in their system.

Doesn’t look too good for xbox 360 owners

GH2 is not being recalled. What happens is, when someone tries to buy a copy of GH2 before release date, it will come up as “Recalled’ in the Target system. What probably happened was someone tried to get GH2 early from a Target that had them out early, then the cashier rung it up to find that it said recalled, and then took manners into there own hands and told customers that it is recalled.

My GH2 guitar works perfectly, so Sony fanbots like lynch can’t gloat.
April 3rd, 2007 at 10:54 pm
By the way, always keep your receipts and buy from stores that accept returns.
April 4th, 2007 at 12:13 am
Mine is doing just that. It only works if I push sideways while doing it, and even then it is sketchy. Mine also has the port next to the power cord.
April 4th, 2007 at 12:22 am
He links a page called get free wii points and you call him a sony fanboy?? ODD? well The it is coming out for the Wii also. On another note. Will Wii owners simply plug in their remotes to a guitar? If that is the case won’t our guitars cost a measly 20 bucks or so?

Totally opposite story for me. I have the top guitar model, (with the pedal in next to the headset jack) and I immediately noticed the lag in the bar. You can hold it down and count to one before it kicks in.

Yeah all you have to do is pull it up towards the strum bar on the guitar. That’s how it works with normal guitars and that is ow they tell you to do it in the tutorial.
April 4th, 2007 at 6:15 am
I’m also having problems with the whammy bar, but i have the guitar with the pedal port next to the headset jack.
April 4th, 2007 at 7:37 am
My whammy bar is fine, there do seem some differences compared to the ps2 version. After playing for a while you seem to home in on this new guitar. Whammy bar seems designed to push down various times to bend your note, if you just push down once there seems a delay, but i tried this with a regular 360 controller and that delay is still there… so seems like a small software bug….
April 4th, 2007 at 7:46 am
Mine works fine… i have the bottom one. Small lag on whammy, but the same lag on my regular controller… so seems like a software bug to me rather than a guitar issue

I noticed a little lag with the whammy bar, but what really concerns me is the “Star Power” function. I’ve noticed inconsistency with its sensitivity. Sometimes it would activate with just the slightest movement (readjusting the guitar during a moment with no notes) to having to jerk the thing over my head and still get no results. Hopefully when I get my 2nd controller it won’t be as bad.
April 4th, 2007 at 8:19 am
Yeah, my 360 whammy bar has problems…it doesn’t register msot of the time.
Several issues with the guitar – cable gets in the way, pointy guitar juts into bicep/chest after an hour, and whammy bar malfunctions.
Step backwards, red octane?

I bough GH2 yesterday and my whammy is screwed as well. The only way it seems to work is to hold the bottom of the whammy bar up while whammying. I’m going to try and get a replacement and see if it works better. What a let down. I have already bought GH1 and Gh2 for PS2 and even used a 3rd party wireless controller and no problems. This is a real let down on Xbox and Activision.

Hello? THIS IS NOT A MICROSOFT PRODUCT. This is a Red Octane product. LOL
I’d love to know how Microsoft is involved.

i have both and i am not having any problems with them except i can’t seem to get my pinkie to use the orange button
April 4th, 2007 at 9:31 am
I am also experiencing intermittent problems with the bar. I think mine are do to whammy “stiffness” though. You have to pull that bar kind of hard. I also thought the “Star Power” was harder to use. Unlike PS2 versions, GHII requires you hold the guitar vertically for a little bit. PS2 versions just require that you “flip” the guitar.

Yeah i picked up my copy on the 3rd and i got through 1.5 songs and the freaking guitar froze up and disconnected. And it WONT reconnect, i finished the song with the 360 controller so i know the game and my 360 work. It seemed to freeze at the same time i hit the whammy, which wasn’t very responsive. I had the guitar with the pedal input next to the usb plug. I already replaced the bundle but haven’t had the oppertunity to test it yet. Any one else have this problem?? I hope the new one works fine.
April 4th, 2007 at 1:27 pm
FIRE! I have one of the defective whammy bars. My guitar has what I’m assuming is the pedal attachment next to the cord and the whammy bar doesn’t work except when I’m able to get it just the right position.

April 4th, 2007 at 4:11 pm
HILARIOUS! The complaints are from people saying the bar only works when pressed sideways! That’s how the bar works! HA! Real smart one to file a complaint before, oh I dunno, doing the tutorial maybe!

I’m not sure which model they use, but in all the store demos I’ve seen so far, that’s definately the case.

I think that if the ppl who are having problems push the wammy toward the strumb bar many problems will be solved. Everyone who ownes GH II for 360 should play the tutorial not only does it teach you how to play and offer tips but there are xbox achevments to be unlocked just by practising & playing the tutorial

I have the game on PS2 and now 360. While the buttons are more responsive and solid on my 360, the whammy bar is aweful. I have a ton of lag. Mine is the model pictured on the bottom of the image in the above post. I’m no fan boy but definitely having the issue. I’ve already sold my PS2 copies of GH and GH2…
April 5th, 2007 at 9:17 am
I’m also running into the same problem… My whammy bar isn’t nearly as responsive as my PS2 guitar… I really gotta push it in to get any reaction, and that’s not good…
Mine has the pedal port buy the power/USB cord…
April 5th, 2007 at 9:53 am
I can confirm this article is right. I have the one with the jack on the side and the whammy bar is unresponsive unless you pull up on it first (then it will work as normal) I fixed this with a very tight rubber band

Having same problem…what should I do then?
April 5th, 2007 at 1:34 pm
The problem probably isn’t the bar being unresponsive. I have the “faulty” model of guitar accessory, and I at first thought the whammy bar was just placed improperly, as I could rarely pull off the whammy. After a while it became easier, getting accustomed to the controller and also wearing it in. It’s a new controller, and the whammy bar is far from loose to start.
It is placed a little awkwardly, though. *shrug*

I work for bestbuy and bought this the other night, and yes, my wammy bar did not work unless I had it cocked at a weird angle, I had it replaced with a new guitar, and the new one works fine. I’ve also seen people return guitars with nonworking buttons.
April 7th, 2007 at 8:43 am
The whammy on my guitar seems to be unresponsive at times, and it is the one with the port next to the controller cord.
April 9th, 2007 at 3:53 pm
I have one of each and neither work not just the whammy bar but the second the game starts up it starts randomly going thru the screen and selecting stuff. Returned one and the same thing happens. I can still play it with the normal controller.
April 10th, 2007 at 4:17 pm
there is a fix for this, but it requires opening the guitar up.
unscrew all the screws from the white guitar back, and then loosen the two screws on the whammybar segment.
once loosened, the component will give way a little. rotate it clockwise a little bit. tighten the screws to keep it in that position.
that worked for me, now the whammybar is bearable.
