RedOctane Responds to 360 Guitar Hero Whammy Problems

On the heels of the story that Game Stooge broke just yesterday, RedOctane has responded to the widespread reports of whammy bar problems with guitars made for the Xbox 360 version of Guitar Hero II.
“In regards to the controller, we’re currently in the process of having our internal QA and production teams look into this possible issue, and are working to quickly isolate this if there is one. In the meantime, we suggest our fans try to replug in their guitars without holding down any buttons or the whammy bar, and that may help immediately resolve the issue.”
They also put to rest suggestions that Target had listed the guitars as recalled on the day of sale. The confusion was the result of Target’s sales system which was programmed to lock out any sales of Guitar Hero II prior to the release date. Evidently, the lock was not lifted in time for the first release day sales and rang up as “Recall for Sale.”
It’s good to hear RedOctane has responded so quickly. As many gamers can attest, there are too many companies that take weeks, months, and even years to respond (if at all). However, judging from posts by some gamers, RedOctane’s initial suggested fix is not fixing the problem. It’s really quite surprising that such an obvious and widespread problem wasn’t noticed in the first place. We’ll continue to monitor this story.

Again, I’ve had no problems with the whammy bar.

Neither have I. I have the supposedly “good” one.

That’s it? What the ‘recalled’ opnes. It’ll fix those too?

I have the controller with the pedal jack next to the power cord. I’ve played the entire game on medium and about halfway on hard, and have not had a problem yet. Is it possible this is region-specific? I’m in southern california.

I have one of the guitars with a problem. It takes a few seconds and a lot of whammying to get the whammy to actually register.

I have the “Good” one and i have had a few times where the whammy bar didnt respond, i just moved it a little bit (rotated it) and it worked, its no big deal but yeah, also i have to tilt it preeeetty high relative to the PS2 version, other than that i love the buttons and the strum bar tho it sounds a little louder maybe (the strum bar click). Its nothing like the wireless controller i bought for my PS2 version a while back and returned the next day due to the awkward feel and the strum bar locking in place if i strum it with the wrong pressure…

There is a calibration - could it be your HDTV is not calibrated?

Hmmm, I found this link because I was wondering why my whammy bar started to get sluggish. I’ve had the game for a few days…the whammy bar worked like gangbusters at first. Then it just seemed to be unresponsive.
No, I’m not freaking whaling on the bar. It just lags on response. It worked fine for 2 days…it still works, but I’m not getting clean execution from it.

I also found this page because i own the PS2 version of the game with a wired and wireless guitar. A friend of mine brought his game and guitar for the 360 over and the first song i played i was like WTF? the whammy bar was almost 100% unresponsive.
It sucks..

I’m right with Aaron, the whammy worked fine the first two days, and now it only works after i move the whammy bar to an awkward position… it works that way, but its way to weird on my fingers for me to do it for a long time.

Yah, I have the “bad” guitar and the whammy bar is noticeably unresponsive. I’m glad that I’m not the only one! I thought initially the problem was that it needed to be set back to a neutral position before whammying again but even that doesn’t work 100% of the time and frankly - if I have to concentrate on getting the whammy bar to work I tend to miss notes. I’m hoping for a recall, it’s actually marring my enjoyment of the game.

I too have the “bad” controller and have begun having issues with the whammy bar. it worked fine for a coupel weeks, but now i can barely make it register wether i hold it down or whammy it very fast.

I have the “bad” controller also. i heard that if you had a guitar with a bad whammy bar then you could take it back for a new one. Where could I go to take it back for a new one?

Matthew,
There’s no formal return/recall process. What people are saying is to just return the controller/game to the store you bought it from and re-buy a new one. You should ask the store employees to check the box before you buy it to make sure you’re getting the right guitar.
If they won’t open it for you before you purchase it, then either go to a different store or check the return policy and open it in the store right after you buy it. If it’s not the right guitar, just return it again.
Good luck!
