20 GB PS3 Abandoned In US

Most of the early adopters of consoles are typically the hardcore among the gaming crowd, who strive to get the best in technology, with the maxed out specs on their systems. It shouldn’t really be surprising then, to see the 20 GB, lower-end model of the Playstation 3 beginning to be phased out.
The Xbox 360 took the same two SKU approach to their console launch with the attitude of giving the customer a choice, but even they have severely undercut production of the lower-end Core system.
The problem is, they just don’t appeal to neither the hardcore, nor the average consumer looking to get the most bang for their buck. Gamesindustry.biz is reporting that a number of large retailers have dropped the 20GB SKU from their online stores, and presumably brick and mortar retail locations. Best Buy, Gamestop/EB, and even Sony’s own Sony Style store all have phased out the model from their online sites, and there’s probably more to come.
It’s not really an out of the ordinary phenomenon though. Every time I’ve seen PS3s in stock at my local game shop, it’s only been the premium unit on display. Even in Europe, Sony’s been reluctant to ship the 20GB version, imaginably due to the poor sales of the lower SKU.
