March 31st; on that day I eagerly fired up my Xbox 360, quickly looking for the new Rainbow Six: Vegas content…which was nowhere to be found. How could this have happened? Didn’t UbiSoft tell us a date? Since we have invested money in their game, and put up with their in-game advertising for months on end, don’t we deserve an on-time download? Apparently not.
I must confess, for my buck, Rainbow Six: Vegas is THE GAME right now. I play it every day, while my other games gather dust and feel ignored. So, even though I was very disappointed on the 31st, I’m willing to forgive my boys at UbiSoft when they actually put out the Player’s Pack on April 18. Not only are there three new maps, Doscala Restaurant, Marshalling Yard, and Roof, plus a tweaked Border Town and Killhouse, but they also decided to bestow upon us two new game modes. Not that there aren’t enough carnage inducing modes already; maybe they feel bad about me having to stare at ads for the Reaping while I’m playing multiplayer. Who knows?
Since Halo 2 made King of the Hill so popular, a ton of games have some type of similar mode. Rainbow will soon have Conquest, which puts three stationary Mobile Radar Installations on the map, which teams have to fight for. Whichever team has the most time in the installations wins. I find this mode extremely simple, but somehow it never gets old.
The second and more exciting mode is Assassination. When I first read about this I wasn’t thrilled; so the point was to usher some computer controlled VIP to a safe point, while the other team tried to take him/her out? How hard could that actually be? I’m forever shooting hostages in the game, and I’m on the team protecting them! But then I found out that the VIP is actually a human player, armed only with an automatic pistol. Now that adds a whole new dimension to the ball game. I can easily see this mode being extremely popular.
So far, no official price has been announced, but it is widely expected to be under 1000 points, as well it should. If we have to look at in-game adds constantly, then whatever price they decided on should be cut in half. Or I should be able to turn off the advertising. Hey, I gotta look at that crap every day on my way to work; I shouldn’t have to stare at it while I’m dodging frags, bullets, and shattering glass. Seriously, who has the time? Set your calender for April 18th, and get ready for some carnage–ads included free!
