Jaffe: I Would Have Taken The Blu-Ray Out

Out of all the top-notch first party developers, David Jaffe of Sony’s Santa Monica studio is by far one of Sony’s greatest assets. Although he doesn’t have a ton of games under his belt, the few games he has created bloomed into many of Sony’s strongest titles. In 1995 he helped kick off Sony’s popularity with the Twisted Metal series, and more recently, in 2005 created God of War.
Jaffe’s always been known to be very outspoken on his opinions, but even his latest, in an interview with GameTrailers turned some heads:
“I probably would have taken the Blu-Ray out and sold it for less money.”
It’s a very popular opinion, but to hear it from someone working out of Sony’s headquarters is very surprising. Do we really need Blu-Ray for gaming? Not really. Although we’ve already seen storage space issues in Japanese developed RPGs such as the Xbox 360’s Blue Dragon, we shouldn’t forget that last-gen’s biggest game: Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas didn’t even occupy a full standard 4GB DVD.
So you’d expect the suits at Sony to be pretty upset, huh? Click “Read more” for a response from SCEA’s David Karraker.
Karraker responded surprisingly neutral, yet critical towards Jaffe’s statement, saying:
David Jaffe is an industry pioneer who has earned the right to speak his mind on anything he wants when it comes to videogames. While we respect his opinion, we feel strongly that the future of gaming lies in the ability to deliver more to the consumer — more gameplay options, more lifelike graphics, more dynamic sound — all in high definition.
