Okay, we did an April Fool’s Joke about other city mayors being upset over Grand Theft Auto IV’s snubbing of their city, but this is real. Staten Island’s local newspaper, The Staten Island Advance, is complaining that GTA4 is leaving Richmond County out in the lurch:
Players carjacking their way across the game’s metropolis, dubbed “Liberty City,” can visit the “Statue of Happiness,” cross the “Algonquin Bridge” and walk into the “Getalife Building.”
They’ll get to mow down pedestrians in the other four boroughs — Manhattan, called “Algonquin”; Brooklyn, or “Broker”; Queens, or “Dukes”; the Bronx, or “Bohan” — and part of New Jersey, or, as the game calls it, “Alderney.”
The news, which was reported on several game industry Web sites yesterday, comes from a 10-page cover story in the May issue of Game Informer magazine.
“New Jersey’s in but Staten Island is out? Wu-Tang will not be happy,” muses one blog comment on the gaming Web site www.kotaku.com, referring to the Staten Island-based Wu-Tang Clan rap group.
Of course, the local yutz politicians are pleased: “That’s something I appreciate being left out of,” said Linda Baran, president of the Staten Island Chamber of Commerce. Don’t worry, honey - there’s always the future episodic content.
[UPDATE: MTV is wondering the same thing.]
