Guitar Hero II (360): It’s Not The Guitar - It’s The Software!

Guitar pwned by software anti-cheating techniqueFor those of you that are thinking about tearing your guitar open to fix the whammy bar: hold on! It’s not the guitar’s problem, it’s the software itself.

We reported about a Guitar Hero II whammy bar problem on April 3rd, turns out to be true but not how you’d think. The whammy bar is fine, the hardware is stable, but the software is not.

“On learning of potential issues with the whammy bar on the Xbox360 guitar, we immediately began extensive testing of both the guitar and the software to isolate any issues with whammy bar functionality and the corresponding causes. Our testing identified a specific software element that may, in certain situations, cause the whammy bar to lose responsiveness. Given that this is a software-driven, an patch is being developed to fix the issue and will arrive as soon as possible via download on Xbox Live. We will confirm soon a target date for this download.”

This software driven issue was to avoid cheating with the whammy bar. As with many anti-cheat fixes it can effect real gamers trying to play normally. There have been “fixes” and “remedies” which require you to pull apart the guitar and tweak the whammy bar innards.

The real solution? Wait for the patch. I wonder how this will effect those that have already “fixed” their guitars, maybe they will become hyper sensitive?

  1. S Holmes Says:

I think it’s pretty obvious that for those who “fixed” their whammy bars, the software update will end up having the same result as in that movie where that 12 year old kid tore a tendon in his arm and it healed back together real tight so he ended up pitching for the Mets.

So, applied to this situation, I think it’s clear that once people hit the whammy bar, the ripples will shoot so hard and fast that they will blow out through the back of the TV.

Jeez, it’s like you guys don’t have any common sense around here.
