US Army Recruitment Method Upsets Hippies
The US Army continues to recruit the youth of American (mainly boys) using any methods possible. Joining the Army is a volunteering system only (for now) so the US Army has to find ways to be hip and cool when working young men into the military. Their latest tactic, sponsoring the Global Gaming League with USD $2-million dollars.
“Victors may win a chance to check out actual computer simulations of combat situations utilized by the Army.”
What better method of recruitment than convincing teenagers that like to shoot things in video games to do it for “real life” in the military? Well, those that believe in peace and life without war don’t really care for the method of “invading” our youths.
It is part of this campaign for the last 20 years to invade youth culture with militarism,” Project on Youth and Non-military Opportunities co-founder Rick Jahnkow told AFP. “It affects the way young people think. It affects their world view. That is a very dangerous thing.” Considering the US has a volunteer army, the recruiters kind of have to “invade youth culture,” it’s not like they can recruit Grandma Yetta’s House of Geriatrics for a solid fighting force.
What happens when the US Army infultrates our gamers with these tactics? Jahnkow says, the war in Iraq is a “prime example” of what occurs. However, it seems a little more dramatic than reality. It’s hard to believe video game shooters are responsible or serve as a prime example of the reasonings for the US forces in Iraq.
