Homebrew Looming In PS3’s Future

This one seems rather backward. Throughout the life of Sony’s PSP, clever programmers and hackers have been assaulting each firmware release like a fat kid does his morning box of Toaster Strudels. Each new firmware release for the PSP has been to prevent unsigned code from being run on their system, however they seem to always be outdone by the PSP homebrew community.
Given this information, it may seem weird then that Sony may be considering opening the gates to the masses by giving indie developers tools to create their own homebrew games and applications for the PS3 — which sounds strangely familiar…seems like Sony’s feeling a little pressure from Microsoft’s XNA initiative.
Talking to GamesIndustry.biz, Sony Worldwide Studio’s Phil Harrison seems pretty enthusiastic about the idea, stating:
I fully support the notion of game development at home using powerful tools available to anyone…if we can make certain aspects of PS3 open to the independent game development community, we will do our industry a service by providing opportunities for the next generation of creative and technical talent
