While PC gaming has remained more towards the more “hardcore” side of gaming, the New York Times is reporting that it may actually be on the rise, appealing and attracting the casual consumers.
The “Playstation” era of consoles can be said to be the main cancer that slowly sucked the life out of PC gaming. The simple plug and play technology meant that you didn’t have to consider whether or not your rig could handle the latest software, you just pop in the latest disc, and go. No worrying about video cards, RAM, or any other components other than the actual system.
However, now, more than ever, casual and console gamers are starting to make the migration to the myriad of PC games offered by the platform. MMOs such as the 8 million subscribed World of Warcraft and Second Life are some of the industry’s largest success stories.
The NY Times’ Michel Marriot throws around a bunch of facts that are showing a complete turn around in sales of PC games. Profits from PC game sales from January and February of this year alone were up 48% compared to the same time period in 2007.
There’s a bunch of fact throwing, and statements supporting their claim, and it’s a good read, but for the hardcore gaming community it may be a little too much “Captain Obvious” than a total retail shocker.
