RUMOR: Bungie Pushing For 1080p, 60 FPS

Microsoft has always been supportive of what they determined was the “sweet spot” of gaming, 720p resolution. Heck, they’ve even gone as far to say that 1080p isn’t possible in games. However, since the launch of the PS3, they’ve come to realize that 1080p is indeed possible, and have since opened the door for developers to program their games to run natively in “Full HD.”

Only a select few of Xbox 360 titles have since shipped supporting native 1080p resolution (NBA Street: Homecourt, Virtua Tennis 3), but if this rumor turns out to be true, Microsoft may be pushing more for maxed out specs on their titles, at least for their biggest gun: Halo 3.

An anonymous tipster claiming to have some kind of connection with Bungie informed PlayThree today that Microsoft’s top contender in the console war, Halo 3 will be edging towards the technical limitations of what a console game can do, running at 60FPS and displaying in the “Full HD” 1080p resolution. Quite a shocker, yet it makes sense. Halo is the one franchise that defines the Xbox, and with it leading the way in technical perfection, many others may be bound to follow.

While the informant confirms that we won’t be seeing this support in the upcoming Beta, he informs us that Bungie employees are already testing for the features internally.

I’m kinda thinking this is not so much Bungie pushing for 1080p / 30FPS so much as it is Microsoft pushing Bungie incessantly. With how much Sony says the next gen is 1080p and solid framerates, MS wants to make a sly pass of “oh yeah, and Halo 3 is 1080p at 30FPS. Is our console next gen now?” trying to be all cool. I wouldn’t doubt Bungie devs want the best performance at the best resolution too, but you can’t tell me that MS wouldn’t have a big squeeze going on.

I can’t help but be afraid some unplanned slowdown will result from going to 1080p.
Why is that every new platform is pushed beyond all common sense? It ruins the game experience.
