RUMOR: Starcraft 2 Announcement May 19 [UPDATE]

A Korean news article is reporting that a sequel to Blizzard’s beloved RTS: Starcraft is already in development, and says to expect a formal announcement of Starcraft 2 at Blizzard’s World Wide Invitational that’ll occur on May 19th at the epicenter of the series’ biggest fanbase in Seoul, South Korea.

Among other news of the nine-year-old franchise, a translation revealed that Starcraft 2 will make the jump to 3D, will add a new race to the series, and tweak many of the existing races and units. Additional details are to be revealed upon a pending official announcement.

Whether it’s true or not, and it most likely is, given the amount of rumors and speculation surrounding it, Starcraft 2 is going to be huge. Dedicated fans of the game are still playing it online to this very day, and that’s not to mention the immense number of the Korean population still hooked on this RTS’ brilliance.

[UPDATE]

Kotaku contacted Blizzard and got the following response all but confirming the above rumor:

We do intend to announce a new product at the Worldwide Invitational next month in Korea, and we appreciate the enthusiasm and interest in getting an advance look at what that will be, but players will have to wait until May 19th to find out more. Also, we have a very strong connection with the characters and settings of StarCraft, and we do plan to revisit that universe at some point in the future, but we don’t have anything new to announce in that regard at present.
