Who Said Nintendo Lacks Variety?

The obvious complaint for Nintendo consoles as of late is that there just isn’t enough third-party support. The problem is, third-parties’ biggest competitor is Nintendo themselves, and the franchises produced by Nintendo are unparalleled when it comes to the competition. But why does every game have to be a Mario, Metroid, or Zelda?

Assuming these aren’t just spinoffs, we may actually start seeing a significant increase in new franchises on the current Nintendo systems. Bloomberg is reporting that Nintendo is developing 45 software titles for the Nintendo Wii, as well as 79 titles for the Nintendo DS — quite a significant amount of games for a single company’s development queue.

With the increasingly quality games and franchises such as Elite Beat Agents, Hotel Dusk, Trauma Center, and a few others being pumped of the treehouse, it’s starting to look awful good for Nintendo fans, but even worse for third-party developers. Is Nintendo once again killing itself from within? We’ll let father time do the pondering…
