Blizzard’s Next MMO: World of Warcraft for the Xbox 360?

Joystiq is reporting that Blizzard Entertainment is looking for a Lead Engine Programmer for a “Next-Gen MMO.” Joystiq immediately assumed that that meant they were working on something for a PC akin to World of Starcraft.
However, when has any PC game ever been referred to as “Next-Gen”? Crysis, for example, is state-of-the-art, but no one calls it “next gen”. No, that title is usually reserved for the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3. It is interesting to note that this job placement ad comes a few weeks after Microsoft announced its new text keypad controller attachment.
Could the rampant rumors a few months ago about an Xbox 360 version of World of Warcraft be coming to fruition? Only time will tell, but this writer is saying: Be prepared to enter Azeroth, Xbox 360 owners.

Looks like your prediction from a few weeks ago might just be true. It wouldn’t be surprising, and has potential to be a big hit.

First Issue: must be playable on a silver account, nobody wants to pay monthly for two services.
Second Issue: new realms for 360 owners? They’ll get owned in pVp by gamers that have keyboards and specifically mice.
Third issue: Lua support? Without the modules the PC gamers have access too (auctioneer, gatherer, etc.) it just won’t be nearly the same experience.
Fourth issue: a “revolutionary” game with a “next-generation” experience playing a game from four years ago…? Not impressive from a graphical standpoint, would gamers buy into it?
Fifth issue: Does anyone care? I mean, it’s on the PC. it’s got 30-million US gamers, who DOESN’T play WoW that would? Even Mac users are hooked. How much buy in would they really get with the 360?
Stick with PC blizzard, build something new and revolutionary for the 360.

Well, you only need a Silver account for Phantasy Star Online, so the precedent is set.

Oh, and no one said it would be a crossplatform (PC 360) MMO either.

“Oh, and no one said it would be a crossplatform (PC 360) MMO either.”
Neither did I. “new realms for 360 owners?” would stop any cross-platform.
The question is- will their be the option to play against PC gamers by sharing realms. That is, if it was really more than a rumor.

This needs some kind of PC to 360 connectivity, because in contrast, the 360 servers will most likely be pretty bare in comparison to those of the PC.

That’s silly. Console games vastly outsell PC games, for one.
For another, one word:
Achievements.
