RUMOR: Blizzard Announcing Starcraft MMO This Month

May 19th marks the date of Blizzard’s World Wide Invitational that’ll take place in South Korea. Rumors have already been circulating throughout the internet with speculation that we may see another establishment in the Starcraft franchise, given the events location.
CVG claims to have the scoop on “Starcraft 2“and all signs are pointing to what Blizzard does best — an MMO.
A “well placed US source” revealed to CVG that the announcement of a massively multiplayer online version of Starcraft will take place at the event on May 19th. However, announcing this in South Korea, just doesn’t seem like the smartest move.
Hardcore fans of the original in Korea have gone to huge lengths to prove their fandom and promote Starcraft to great heights among gaming culture in Asia, spawning TV tournaments and even deaths among the RTS’ elite. This announcement could likely spawn a cloud of disappointment, as well as a crowd of angry gamers looking towards Blizzard for defamation to their beloved franchise.
Until May 19th, we’ll have to chalk this one up strictly as “rumor.”

There are a lot of indications pointing to Blizzard making a new MMORPG. Personally, I think it’s a bit early for them to be doing that: WoW just got it’s first expansion pack. At this point, its crown as ‘king of the MMORPGs’ looks pretty safe for the next few years. Porting WoW to either the PS3 or XB360 seems quite possible to me, though.
That still leaves open the question of what they’ll be announcing on the 19th, though. Could they be working on a Starcraft 2 along with a MMORPG project? One thing we can know for sure, though, is that whatever it is, it’ll take FOREVER to actually ship… (Blizzard tradition.)
