In what will certainly be a welcome, albeit unexpected addition to the PS3’s firmware v1.8 update, Sony has added support for 1080p 24 Hz output for Blu-Ray playback. The option is listed under the BD/DVD Settings menu as “BD 1080p 24 Hz Output (HDMI)” and includes the description “Sets the playback method for BDs recorded at 24 Hz (frames/second).” This option can be turned off but is set by default to “Automatic.”
High end televisions that support 24 Hz playback have only recently begun hitting the market. They are sought after by AV enthusiasts for their superior playback of film which is traditionally recorded in 24 frames per second. Blu-Ray playback on the PS3 (and nearly all currently available high definition players) was originally limited to 60 Hz (60 frames/sec), which can lead to “motion jutter” in camera panning and fast video.
