Lucasarts Making Lightsaber Game for Wii?

Financial website Fin24 recently posted an article not too dissimilar from any other one detailing the Wii’s mainstream success and appeal. Look carefully, however and you’ll notice this little tidbit:

The head of the LucasArts, the game division for “Star Wars” series creator George Lucas, told AFP a Wii game that lets players wield virtual light sabers is on the horizon.

We all knew it was bound to happen at some point in time, and coming from the hand that feeds Star Wars fans, it’s looking like the dream of a game set in the universe for Nintendo’s latest platform might just come true at last.

Awesome idea: lightsaber sound effects coming from the Wii-mote’s speaker.

  3. Isaac Says:

    Wow, this is definately a game I would be getting! Right now I only have 3 games for my Wii (Wii Sports, Wii Play, and Zelda). I’d gladly shell out $50 for a lightsaber game.

  4. Emrah Says:

    They wont be able to do lightsabre duels though, when the blades clash, the remote wont have anything to stop it from continuing the move. With a real sword when you hit something that you cant cut, the blade rests on the surface but with just a remote, you wont be able to do emulate that.

  5. Testies Says:

    Emrah, I hate you.

  6. Jad Says:

    I really hope this is true. We know there will be a Lego Star Wars (combining both previous games) for the Wii, so one might assume there will be some lightsaber action with the wiimote. Hopefully they are referring to a new game!

  7. Donner Says:

    They will probably have some kind of saber lock when swords clash and there will be a power struggle like in wrestling. You would lose control of the saber unless you pull it back and off the other saber.

    Just a guess though

  8. Cannis Says:

    @Emrah

    I’m not so sure it can’t be emulated though. Even in Zelda:TW the sword strikes surfaces and stops momentarily before it’s position resets on the screen. While it is stopped the rumble feature is reacting at a high intensity level. True nothing stops the Wii-mote from continuing in the arc, but it just means players will have to exercise a finer control over their movements. When you feel the rumble feature start to vibrate stop your arc or bring the blade back to neutral, so that you have less distance required to reset for your next attack.

    meh .. my 2cents.

    Cannis

  9. Brett Says:

    Can we go through walls? No, but we still have walls in games, simply the lightsabre will not bounce back until you go in the opposite direction. Until then it would just be like force being pushed onto the other lightsabre

  10. wraider1 Says:

    Emrah,
    MOD – a nerf sword that will stop “when the blades clash”

  11. Mateo Says:

    The remote doesn’t need to stop. Just add some serious force feedback when the sabers clash. If you’ve played the Star Wars Arcade game at Dave and Busters, etc., it’s pretty much the same thing. You have a joystick that you can tilt to the left pretty much forever, however the blade on screen stops when it collides with Vader’s saber. In fact I think with the Wii remote it will go beyond that. Think of it as an invisible line coming out of the Wii Remote that other lightsabers can’t cross. Adding a sufficient amount of force feedback and lightsaber sounds coming from the Wii remote will signal a collision between the two remotes. Imagine blocking blaster fire by moving the Wii remote towards a certain area of the screen that is indicated by arrows on the screen. Kindof an early Force warning of blaster fire. As long as you have your Wii remote in the general area in a timely manner you will block the blaster fire or parry a lightsaber swing. I think this has alot of potential to be a good game. Maybe they should make a Wii lightsaber controller specifically for the game…

  12. twtchr44 Says:

    hey emrah…

    im sure they’d find a way to use the force and have the wiimotes stop durin a clash XD

    dude, i soooo can’t wait for this game!

  13. n3ur0m Says:

    @Emrah:
    Why can’t they just vibrate the wiimote to indicate a clash. If you keep going, your ingame character loses balance or something like that… Very fast play could be implemented with this method.

  14. Tom Says:

    Emrah, your comment is very short sighted.

    No offense or anything. Besides modded wiimotes (as Steve suggested), official products will likely be available too… this is Star Wars, after all.

  17. Nic Says:

    Couldn’t they have a powered peripheral that throws a little weight to stop the movement? It would basically lengthen the remote and the weight would be at the end for the best effect. I know I’m explaining that poorly, but I think you could make a cheap enough peripheral that could stop the wiimote in its tracks.

  18. Ann Says:

    Man, this would be so cool.
    I don’t own a Wii, but I would buy it just for this :)
    Please, please, God let them make such a game!

  19. emrah buster Says:

    Emrah;
    Through the magic of math you can determine a collision (or virtual colision).

    The collision detection would be based on speed and the line segments route in the 360*360. The origin of the line segment is the remote and the length depends on the game etc…

  20. El Capitan Says:

    Lots of good points here! I hope someone’s doing some game research based on these discussions. Personally I like the idea of being required to exercise more control over your movements, “…control, you must learn control,” On top of these idears I’d like to pose a poor swordsmanship concept. Much like the average non-jedi would likely cut themselves to pieces if they tried using a light saber fancy-like, I think the game should force you to not make dangerous moves. Like swinging the saber through yer neck without chopping your head off. Not too worried about this weight-feedback and super-specialized controls for this game, the wii-mote is already super-specialized, but I can see snap-on parts like the tennis rackets and baseball bats currently available.
    May the Force… well, ya’ll know the line!!

  31. Gav Says:

    @Emrah:

    While that is true, the wiimote will most likely not have a 1:1 movement equivilance to the onscreen lightsabre, otherwise you’d have people stabbing themselves in the head. Most likely, if you continue to move the wiimote downwards after clashing, the lightsabre just wont move, and you’ll have to move the wiimote up again. Combined with a bit of rumble when the wiimotes/lightsabres clash, dueling would possibly be quite cool.

  43. Ian Says:

    I’m betting that you will have to push a button to hold blades when they clash, and it will probably be the same button to block. This would be a hindrance to some, but it would illiminate blocking or clashing when your trying to do something else.

  44. bodonar Says:

    They can simulate the wielding of a lightsaber taking the info from the accelerometer and direction of the wiimote ‘pointer’. When moving the wiimote slowly you woudn’t slash your saber but when you move it fast, and depending from which point you started accelerating and the direction of the ‘pointer’ you will perform an attack, for instance, up-left to down-right would perform a diagonal attack, left to right an horizontal attack and so on, and the defense stance would we acomplished by pressing a button and a direction, to cover from upside-down attacks or side-to-side attacks. Remember how the lightsaber was used in Jedi Outcast? Isn’t the wiimote used also as a mouse? Then let’s smooth it up to get a mixture of Jedi Outcast in the mechanics (more dynamically) and the field of view in Red Steel, in that you have to move your weapon to one border to rotate or just use the nunchaku. You could also bring up your saber by pressing a button to turn it on or holding a button to attack/defend. Collision detect would be easy since you would know where the handle is and what the ‘vector’ of the saber would be depending at which point of the lightsaber attack movement is. The rest is pure maths. Hope you can have a more clear view of the game now. (by the way, defense should be ‘automatic’ if you block in the right direction, and one-touch kills shoud be enabled as well as slicing and lla that gore details we love, hahaha.)

  47. John Says:

    I think what this game would need is a specialised “wand” that looks and feels like a lightsaber. After playing Wii sports at a friends place, the most noticable issue is that certain movements get cut-off or not detected at all. Ie: Wii Boxing. So this “wand” would need a whole bunch of sensors in it, so that every tilt and motion of the “saber” is correctly represented on screen. I also agree with Phil, in that having access to other force powers via the nun-chuck would be awesome. Although I’d go with the Wii-mote for these, as I wouldn’t want the little nun-chuck plugged into my saber, as the cord tends to get all twisted. And ofcourse put a lanyard or trigger loop on that “wand”. Finally, I too will immediatly drop the cash to buy a Wii and the game even for $100 bucks. Total dream come true.
