Tomb Raider Anniversary Going Episodic on 360?

The model of episodic gaming has been one that many game developers seem to have a peaked interest in, and with games such as Half Life 2 and Sam and Max taking the plunge into the new market sector, the term “episodic” has quickly become an industry-wide buzzword.

Digging through the ESRB’s listing of recently rated games, 1UP uncovered what looks to an Xbox 360 version of Tomb Raider Anniversary, but broken up into five different sections: Peru, Lost City, Greece, Egypt, and Croft Manor.

It’s hardly a surprise that Tomb Raider Anniversary is making its way to the 360, given it runs on the same engine that powered last year’s Tomb Raider Legend, rather it’s the delivery model in question that peaks our interest. Leading the way into console episodic gaming, Eidos has a chance to really lead the way in pioneering an excellent business model on the Xbox Live Marketplace. Then of course, it could always go the other way and result in a gaming backlash.

Another issue that comes into mind is the amount of hard drive space that we’ll have to work with. Although Microsoft has stated that they aren’t going to start pushing out gigabytes upon gigabytes of content because of the newly released 120 GB hard drive and Xbox 360 Elite, chances are that this might further reduce the amount of space for the majority of us who are stuck with the lowly 20 GB hard drive.

It depends whether or not this ends up raising the cost of the game as whole; my guess is that it will.

Companies like digital distribution - cut there costs of distribution, and instead of passing on savings, they charge you a premium for the convenience. Its a win win.
