PSP’s Full Potential Gets Unlocked in Latest Update
In comparison to the Sony PSP’s console siblings, the handheld has always done a fairly good job in emulating the “console experience” with graphical and processing abilities light years ahead of the competition.
Reports are now surfacing that the abilities of the system may be expanding with the latest firmware update (3.50) allowing developers to fully utilize all 333 MHz of the processor’s power.
The stock hardware has always been set to run at 226 MHz in concern for one of the issues that many already have with their PSP — battery life. With this update, already distributed out to PSP owners, developers will be able to produce better looking, and even better running games for the system.
It’s not technically a new technique or application of the PSP’s abilities, however — with custom firmware, and applying many unofficial exploits and hacks, tech-savvy users of the handheld have been reaping the benefits for more than a year. Several bootloaders have enabled the “overclocking” to 333 MHz, but with constant firmware updates from Sony, those willing to upgrade to the latest firmware have lost out on the action.
