We posted a poll on June 4th, 2007 asking what you thought of 2D side-scrollers, and after around a huge sampling of votes (okay, just around 150 votes, but it’s still a lot!), over 40% overwhelmingly said: “Bring ‘em back on next-gen!” Combine that with the 14% or so who wanted to see them return on all systems, and that’s a whopping majority of love.
It just proves a few things, the foremost of which is that simpler is sometimes better. Do you need a fancy gamepad to simply run in a direction and jump? It also says that people still enjoy older games like Super Mario Bros., Lode Runner and RType. It also gives one reason hand-helds, the last bastion of jumpers and side-scrolling shooters, are so successful, and why games like Prince of Persia Classic, N+ and Aegis Wing are and could be best-sellers on next-gen downloadable services like Xbox Live Arcade, Virtual Console and PlayStation Network. (Okay, Aegis Wing was free. So shoot me.)

My stance on 2d side scrollers…
- The 80’s are over, move on.
- I’d love to see 2d side scrollers return on now-generation systems!
- Side scrollers are for hand-helds.
- Side scrollers are dead to me, I wish they’d just fade away!
- I missed the side scroller era, I’d love to see them come back.
- Good for emulators, bad for consoles
- Two words: Master Blaster!
- I care not for your 2d gaming.
