DS sells more because there are more kids out there crying for virtual pets and there are some dumb asses out there like you who look at stats and say, "hey, DS sells more so it must be good."

There is nothing wrong with whatever you highlighted. As a matter of fact, PSP is more than just a gaming device.

I think the psp is really great, but I'd like to buy a DS as well. the first DS wasn't looking that great, I tried it but it was too big, and the quality of the screen was really bad. but the lit looks really nice.

About the PSP, I love it, I use it as an Ipod, since my pod is broken, I can watch video, And play great games. I can put some pictures on it and show it to my friends, I can even share pictures. The wifi is quite nice and being able to browse web site is quite coool but not really user friendly. Same think for the RSS reader. I put also comic books on my psp, but I'm sad that I'm not able to listen to music and see pictures (read my comic book). And the screen my friend, the screen... Makes me feel like I have a HD TV if I swich of the light...lol....

And since they say they will unlock the cpu of the psp with the 3.50 firmwire, the games will look even nicer. But I'm gonna have to buy a more powerful battery.

What I'm waiting for is a portable Xbox :-) that's gonna be nice..

The PSP is a capable system and it's great that it has all these features, and I love them all.

That said, I don't think that ANY OF THEM are being utilized AT ALL.

Put the PSN on the PSP and they're in business - Connect could offer movies and music too.

all this is is more childish sony-bashing.

the psp IS an amazing piece of kit, it IS great at gaming, and it has a ton of features that make it so much more.

bitching about developers wanting to explore new possibilities will only stifle innovation.

and for the love of god, the psp is NOT a ds.

@HarryB:
Well they did something similar with the PS3 , they say it's more of a general use / media computer than a console but at the same time it's still quite a gaming platform. And that's not a bad thing as all consoles have become basically PC's ..all that was missing was the software.
Where I'm trying to get is the PSP is not wrongly marketed as a gaming device , it was constructed around games (see the buttons on it's face) , it just happens they added a lot of things to it , and mainly that costs nothing more (software functions).
Hell it would have been a total waste if they didn't add other features to it because it already had the horsepower.
Sony isn't trying to separate it NOW , they did that from the beginning.
The PSP fails because parents just buy a cheaper DS for their kinds. After all kids don't need a GPS or a media player.

@Jack: The confusion is created because the PSP was placed under the Playstation brand, which is a gaming device. The name "Playstation Portable" gives the impression that it is a Playstation on the go, and Sony branded it purposely this way.

So it causes confusion for a Sony rep to now say that it is not a gaming machine. This is akin to Microsoft coming out with an "Xbox Portable" (XBP) instead of a Zune, PMP, cell phone, PDA, etc and then later saying games aren't the focus. If games aren't the focus, then the device should not have a gaming brand. Microsoft should call it something like a "Windows Portable" instead of an "Xbox Portable".

Similarly, if Sony didn't want the PSP associated with just games, they shouldn't have called it a Playstation Portable. They could have called it a Walkman Portable or a PC Portable or something else that encompasses a broader vision.

But that's not even the point. The real reason for these comments seems to be that Sony now wants to separate the PSP from the DS because of lagging sales. If the DS is not in competition with the PSP, it's sales will not be compared to it.

They're basically trying to rebrand the PSP. So now, despite having a gaming brand, they don't want the PSP to be seen as a gaming handheld. This will probably cause confusion with the consumer public, and could possibly further hurt sales.

I used to work with Tony Buckley, he's a really smart guy and an experienced video game professional. I think it would be a bit difficult for anyone to defend the PSP with it's current flaws.

What I think he was getting at is that the PSP has never gotten a fair shake. It's a really slick piece of technology, amazing screen (just make sure you get a $3 screen cover), considerable CPU power, good battery life (~4 hours for me, sometimes more), but it's not completely realized. It's lack of a second analog stick is inexcusable, the online features have been completely gutted by SCE's failure to adopt a consolidated online strategy (connect.com is a joke) Sony's pricing structure for UMD is a disaster, the pointless use of expensive and proprietary memory cards (MemoryStick Pro Duo), the lack of basic PDA software, outright lack of official add-ons (KEYBOARD!!!), a usable interface (typing in web addresses is like using an emulation of an SMS system), the lack of a harddrive. It's not this guy that's to blame, it's crystal clear that SCE's departments aren't talking and certainly aren't agreeing on anything.

I bought a PSP at launch, and truth be told there haven't been too many games that I've really gotten into with it besides GTA's and Lumines, with the hacked firmware it's slightly better, but as whole the PSP is awful.

instead of ignoring the verbal abuse you ignore the arguments...smart.

if it's the name you're interested in ... what should DS suggest? And does it have anything to do with games ?
Why doesn't the xBOX pack things in boxes ?

Actually, one CAN seriously say that the Wii is next-gen. Just not in the traditional "Current Gen on Steroids" sense. Because honestly, what is the PS2/PS3/Xbox 360/Gamecube if not, essentially, a pumped up version of it's predecessor? Yes, some major improvements had/have been made, but nothing like the differences between the PSP and the DS.

They all play games, most play CDs/DVDs, and they use the same basic controller shape- two "handles" to grip with your hands, at least one analog stick, 4 "action" buttons on the right, etc.

The Wii is trying to break this cycle of "6 years in development and all we can put out to follow Console X is a 'Super Console X' that has been the norm for over a decade.

So yeah you can make a very clear argument that the Wii is next-gen.

Oh, and if you don't want a PSP, don't buy one. That's a pretty simple solution. I have one, and i wouldn't trade it for anything. Except some decent PS3 exclusives other than Resistance.
