This Week’s New Releases: June 24 – June 30

What the heck is going on? This should be a time when I’m trying to horde as much cash together in anticipation of the fall and holiday blockbusters, but it’s only the summer and I’m almost officially broke.

One of the most anticipated titles in this lineup is The Darkness for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. For those not in the know, it’s based on the slightly obscure comic book of the same name, and involves a younger mob member who gets overcome by a family curse called the Darkness. He then proceeds to do what any of us would do with these powers: kick all kinds of ass.

But, that’s not what has us excited — it’s the developer, Starbreeze’s track record. Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay has long been regarded as one of the Xbox’s premiere titles, and if the Darkness turns out anything like it, consider me a happy camper.

On the you might not care, but guaranteed to get Nintendo raking in the cash tangent, another big title this week is Pokemon: Battle Revolution. With millions of Wiis out there, and already millions of copies of Diamond and Pearl in the hands of just about every age group, this one’s destined for success. Granted, it’s little more than a shell for the battling found in the handheld versions, but it’s (a) one of the first online Wii titles and (b) offers up some spiffy DS to Wii connectivity.

The Bigs swings onto current generation consoles, alongside Rainbow Six: Vegas for the PS3, and Overlord for the Xbox 360. On the o.g. Xbox front — wait, huh? Yeah, that’s right, the original Xbox gets a game, but don’t get your hopes up, because it’s only a result of the summer, movie-licensed game bonanza! It’s in full effect this week, with Transformers, Harry Potter, and Ratatouille.
