Latest PSP Firmware Reveals Possible Digital Distribution
Many users within the PSP modding and homebrew scene have come across a hidden file buried deep within the v3.50+ firmware code that looks to unlock yet another feature that’s already been done unofficially, an ISO loader.
ISO what? An ISO loader is essentially an application that lets you boot up games from within your PSP’s memory stick. If you’ve been involved in the homebrew scene for the device, you would know all about them by now; for more than a year ISO loaders have provided an underground piracy scene that gives you access to just about the complete library of PSP games.
So what does this mean for the future? My guess is that we’ll be seeing some kind of implementation of a downloadable service, a la iTunes for games. With the success of downloadable games on the PS3 and Xbox 360, it would make sense for the PSP to jump on the bandwagon, and the possibilities of transferring purchased PSN titles over seem pretty enticing.
