What Does Wii Balance Boarding And RPG’s Have In Common?

Nothing really, but that’s the humor in it! Motomu Toriyama of Square Enix spoke with IGN about WiiFit and this little balancing board. The interview, which started as talk about Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings kinda brought up the topic of WiiFit on their interest in the design.
Do you have interest in using the microphone or Wi-Fi in future DS titles?
Toriyama: We’re definitely interested in the multiplayer and local connection element. And we’d like to look into it for the future. We don’t know about the mic function so much because it might not be too convenient if you’re playing on the train. Right now we’re mostly interested in Wii Fit. We’re really intrigued by it.
Now, don’t start thinking the next Final Fantasy game is going to involve pushups or yoga, “there are no actual plans to take Final Fantasy into the fitness genre, but that whole system and mechanism of using your weight and balance to control games is something we’re interested in incorporating into future RPG titles.”
We’re not really sure if “intrigued” is enough to get a company to invest time and money into an off-the-wall fitness accessory, but with enough consumer base in the Wii it’s hard to tell what won’t work. Throw it against the wall and see what sticks. If WiiFit is a hit (woah, that rhymes) then perhaps more balance boarding products will be in its near future.
