Bioshock Doesn’t Do Widescreen So Well

On a day that we were all looking forward to since we got our hands on a demo for what is being billed as an early “Game of the Year” nominee, people who bought BioShock aren’t as happy as they thought they’d be — at least those individuals who are playing the game on a widescreen monitor.
The image posted (Click to enlarge) shows what is getting cut off on widescreen displays: The red areas are on screen if you’re playing on a 4:3 screen, but otherwise, it completely cuts them off when playing in widescreen. For shame 2K, for shame!
What is really rubbing people the wrong way is a quote from Chris Kline in May.
“You will see more in widescreen. We use a different projection matrix; there is no squashing or stretching of the image involved.”
Oh, really? I guess he’s right. The two are very different. 2K is now actively seeking out the problem and will get back to the issue shortly.

In a word, horsepucky. I own a widescreen TV and it shows more information than that.
Seems like some people did not configure something correctly.

I thought something felt off when I played the demo last night. To me it felt like the wrench was being held too close to my body, and I found the field of view a bit weird. I thought maybe some of this was due to the dark nature of the game, but I guess not.
I’ll have to fire up the demo again tonight and see if it bothers me even more, now that I know what really is happening.

Some people don’t know the diff between 4:3 and 16:9.
