Gamasutra is reporting that analysts are predicting that Sony will be forced to drop the price on the 80GB PS3 for the holidays:
“We note that Sony recently acknowledged that it will no longer produce its 60Gb PS3,” said Pachter, “and we expect the price of the 80Gb PS3 to be reduced to $499 before the holidays, maintaining a premium SKU at that price point.”
Pachter says the drop “could serve as a catalyst for sales growth later in the year,” and predicts that Sony could “again be in a position to cut the price of the PS3 in early 2008, when blockbuster games Grand Theft Auto IV and PS3 exclusive Metal Gear Solid 4 will launch…”
Divnich notes that PS3 trading on simExchange shows the Xbox 360 “on path to outsell the PS3 by over 2 to 1 this holiday season (Oct/Nov/Dec),” but says “from our perspective, Sony has no choice but to make some type of move this holiday season, regardless of the financial loss that may occur.”
Ouch. This after they cut the price on the 60GB PS3’s and remaindered them.

Sales growth? SALES GROWTH? You know what will grow sales, pick an F’ING PRICE AND STICK TO IT.
I’ve bought things on eBay with a more consistent price than this box. Why would I go out and buy their product when I can wait a month and get a lower price, then wait another month for a lower price. This is much like shopping for a house right now, just wait for the price to become reasonable.
If you don’t stop screwing with pricing people are just going to hold out for the ‘next lower price’ and never buy.

[...] After wrongly predicting the PlayStation 3 would outsell the Xbox 360 in July, Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter is now predicting the almost unthinkable: the PlayStation 3 price will drop to $399 in April. This follows other analysts’ predictions that the PS3 better have a $499 price tag during the holiday season or else. [...]
