XBLA = $$$$

Printing Own Money, Part IVGameSpot is reporting that Microsoft’s conference “Getting Your Game on Xbox Live Arcade” at the Austin Game Developers Conference showed off some impressive stats regarding the 7 Million Xbox Live user base (of 11.4 million 360 owners):

When the numbers turned to the XBLA service, it got a lot more interesting. On average XBLA titles are making $125,000 in the first week of release. On top of the first week numbers, it was revealed that far more than with boxed games, XBLA titles are making making more money than expected further into their “digital” shelf life, to the tune of 65% of earnings coming after the title has been released for two months. While I’m no mathematician, I think that it’s safe to say that on average, XBLA titles are making almost half a million dollars (and those numbers will continue growing).

It would be interesting to see the numbers on Virtual Console and PlayStation Network.

(Thanks, XBLArcade.)

    I’m a heavy contributor.

    I say “interesting” because I’d love to know how much of it is online downloadable games and how much of it is Xbox Live itself. 7M users is a huge base, but how many does each user download?

    How many people that own a Wii have taken advantage of VC?

    Stuff like that.

    This is great news for smaller companies that don’t want to be beaten to death by publishers grubby hands. Okay, well, Microsoft will still take the majority of the cash for being the digital publisher, but if this yields MORE sales then smaller companies can make MORE money.

    Digital is the way of the future, we all know it. This is no surprise… if it is, then you know what’s wrong with you.
