A post on David Jaffe’s blog let’s everyone know that Sony employees either don’t understand Halo, or they flat out dislike it. Jaffe’s post showed an AIM conversation between himself and Adam Orth (a Sony designer who worked alongside Jaffe on Twisted Metal: Black and Calling All Cars). Here are some highlights of this epic conversation. The topic? The recent Halo 3 ad- “Believe“:
Adam: well, for 1, i think it’s disrespectcful to actual veterans of real wars
and 2, they really expect people to become that invested in the halo story?
i guess i just really dislike halo and that ad aint helping
Jaffe: well that’s what I mean about buying the hype. I don’t dislike Halo at all and really liked parts of Halo 2 alot…I am in minority who felt single player halo 2 was better than halo 1 single player. I mean, I hear people talk about the flood and shit and I’m like: what? Who gives a shit.
Adam: halo = meh
And my favorite:
ADAM: fuck halo
Hit the link to read the full IM conversation. It’s chocked full of how much Halo is overhyped, how the recent ad campaign is disrespectful to veterans and how Jaffe wears his flame suit.

Hmm … I really don’t know anymore, sure the storyline is deep, but I don’t wanna read tons of books to keep up with the prophets, the grave mind, the spartan program and so on. And the recent Mountain Dew, Burger King, 7/11, Target/NASCAR Ad-campaign and what not blew the hype machine just out of proportion.
Don’t get me wrong I’ll buy it, I’ll play it, but it’ll be the game only edition, because Halo is just a basic 3Dshooter when it comes down to its core gameplay. And to be honest the Beta stole a lot of thunder, at least for me and a couple of guys on my friends list; we hardly clocked in 20hours on it, before switching games and/or console.
So Bungie didn’t invent a new wheel here but it sure keeps one rolling.

Halo is meh. It’s an FPS in a kind of cool universe. That does not, however, make God of War any better than a “Press Square, Win!” game.
Still, people are reporting this all over like it’s higher ups talking shit about it, when it’s a casual conversation Jonah and I have daily.

How can they say this about Halo?!?!! It’s so original!
Not surprising at all. Other developers look at Halo and see a competitor that’s blowing them away in sales. At least it’s a different viewpoint then the one going around the industry now that thinks Halo is the be-all, end-all franchise.
