EA Steals Sony’s Thunder, Shows DualShock 3

IGN is reporting that EA has stolen Sony’s ‘rumbling’ thunder. While they played the PS3 version of EA’s Burnout Paradise, they felt something weird. Something unexpected from a PS3 controller. It rumbled! Not only that, it had a big “RUMBLE” sticker. So, that sort of gives away the ‘surprise‘.

In fact, the controller we were using to play the demo looked exactly like a standard Sixaxis, except that it had a sticker on the bottom that said “RUMBLE.” It also felt notably heavier than the standard Sixaxis.

Expect to see the official announcemnt at Kaz Hirai’s keynote address tomorrow.

    But it’s a “last-gen feature”. :p

Hey, if your consumer wants something, give it to them…

Like if my 360 dies, MS will send me one that works!

Yeah, sure. They why did they say no one cared about rumble, and that it was a last-gen feature?

It’s like being caught cheating on your loved on and making excuses - it isn’t that you cheated, it’s that you turned into a bullshit artist and didn’t act like a man and own up.

Oh, come on now, Jonah. It’s no different than Microsoft claiming that HDMI isn’t necessary, or that games won’t require a hard drive, etc. They’re marketing positions based on the perceived deficiencies of the system.

The only difference is, Sony was in the middle of its lawsuit with Immersion at the time they said rumble was “last gen.” So, their hands were kind of tied. Whereas Microsoft’s position on HDMI, for example, was for no reason other than the fact that it was a bullet point they didn’t have and the PS3 did. They actively chose not to include it at launch and it’s clear that the market convinced them that HDMI was a necessary feature, hence the roll-out of the Elite and now Premium systems with HDMI.

It’s not like Sony just chose to omit rumble from PS3 controllers. Everybody knows they would have included it from the start if it weren’t for the lawsuit. There’s certainly a lot of things that informed consumers can criticize all three of the “next gen” systems for, but I think the smart ones give Sony a pass on the whole “rumble is last gen” thing.
