Report: Sony Quietly Dropping PS4 Plans?

HD Game News is putting forth the shocking idea that Sony may be quietly exiting the console hardware business as Sega did, in light of Sony’s plans to sell Cell chip manufacturing to Toshiba.

However the biggest nugget of information to take away from this post is that Sony is now reducing its spending on the “next generation chip that will succeed the Cell presumably for Playstation 4. With the added competition that Sony now has in Microsoft and Nintendo, the last thing in world Sony would want to do is be technologically behind it competitors on the next hardware cycle unless planning to bow out of the hardware race.

Sony may be looking to pull a Sega and go multi-platform software only.

If Sony did the unthinkable and pulled out, who would fill the void? What about spores that play directly in your adrenal gland in the year 2078?

This article is just an excuse to post the PS9 video. :p

The Circle of Life. The only constant is Nintendo, all others must fall and die.

  3. MitchyD Says:

YES. They must fall and die in the wake of the worst system ever created. The one that doesn’t support good software.

  4. jonahfalcon Says:

Oh, goody. Lair 2 for the 360. Blecch.

  5. MitchyD Says:

… What? Lair will NEVER see a sequel.

  6. jonahfalcon Says:

People said the same thing about Killzone.

  7. AL7AIR Says:

Yeah … another company quitting the “console war” bringing even less competition for the rest, if this continues we’ll see market domination followed by re-used game ideas and not that many really new IPs. So with one more competitor gone and a walk in the park for the shrinking rest the prices will rise. Seriously, whoever welcomes Sony failing and quitting (or any other company for that matter) hasn’t looked too far into the future and only the fanboy ego is making him/her happy right now.

  8. MitchyD Says:

The difference is Killzone had redeeming qualities: A great story, memorable characters and an awesome universe. It just played at 20 frames. =(

The Return of Atari to Hardware. :p

Lol, anyone remember a few years ago before the Wii came out? There were talks of nintendo going the way of a 3rd party publisher, since the cube sucked ass. Did they? Hell no, they came out with the Wii which apparently everyone and their mom loves.

“Sony is now reducing its spending on the next generation chip… the last thing in world Sony would want to do is be technologically behind it competitors”

Aren’t the chips they are using in the PS3 so advance that game companies are having a hard time developing games for it? I don’t think they have to worry. Their current technology surpasses the 360 and Wii. (graphically and power wise)

  11. Jonah Falcon Says:

They’re having a hard time because the coding is so obscure and messy. Devs love writing for the 360 because it uses DX9.

Please, don’t be a Pointy Haired Boss and try to say a bad programming system is an “advanced feature”.
