Sony Removed Backwards Compat to Spur PS3 Game Sales?

Sometimes, you really have to wonder what’s going on in Jack Tretton’s or Sony’s brain. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal:
Mr. Tretton conceded that removing that capability [backwards compatibility], along with a few other features, isn’t dramatically reducing Sony’s cost of manufacturing the console but will instead encourage buyers of the entry-level PlayStation 3 to purchase more games designed specifically for the new system.
So… it was all the PlayStation 2 games that made the PS2 outsell the PS3 by 2 to 1? And removing features while keeping production costs the same and lowering the price of the system will help? If it works, then it’s a brilliant move. Otherwise…
