GameStop Offs Xbox 360 Extended Warranty Plans

The Xbox 360 has had problems. It’s become a realization that many have faced via the Red Ring of Death and numerous calls to the Microsoft Repair Center (number 4, here). If an early leak is to be believed, it looks like those Microsoft support lines might just be the only option for affected customers who purchase their 360 from GameStop/EB Games.

GamersReports received a tip from a GameStop managerial memo, which reads as follows:

Effective immediately, GameStop will no longer offer PRP’s on new, refurbed, and used Xbox 360 systems. When prompted by the POS “Do you want a PRP plan added to this purchase,” please press “Escape” and DO NOT offer PRPs to customers purchasing an Xbox 360 system. Customers purchasing a new Xbox 360 system will still receive a 1 year manufacturer’s warranty from Microsoft.

Two possible reasons that I can think of come to mind. Either: a.) GameStop is taking a serious hit in the financial department or b.) the addition of new SKUs with new features (65 nm processors, HDMI now a standard, etc…) is causing too many headaches among the staff.
