IGN explains how the Paragon/Renegade duality works in Mass Effect:
Forget the notion of “Good” and “Evil” choices in an RPG. Mass Effect is actually not about choosing to save or rule the universe. You are going to save the universe, that’s your mission. But you don’t have to be nice about it. The Renegade may be selfish, aggressive, and often ruthless, but he (or she) is not a villain. He’s just an intergalactic cop who knows the Milky Way is one effed up place and that a stern look and some hot bullets are more effective than hugs and kisses…
…If you want a good laugh, then you want to be a Renegade. Paragons are nice to everyone and want to know about people’s feelings. They have no funny dialogue. The Renegade acts like an IGN editor — he doesn’t have time for anybody’s crap. And he lacks the social skills necessary for playing nice. Some of the things that come out of the Renegade’s mouth are hilarious. We half-expected — after telling the Spectre council to kiss our ass — for our Krogan companion to roll his fat neck, snap his fingers, and say, “Oh no he didn’t!” But yes, yes he did…
According to the Mass Effect acheivements and the IGN “3 Red Lights” podcast, you’ll have to play more than once to get all the Achievements, since certain Achievements are Paragon/Renegade-aligned, too (ie. Becoming 75% Paragon or Becoming 75% Renegade.)
