FIRST TAKE: PAIN (PlayStation Network)

PAIN on the PS3’s PlayStation Network, is a game in which the name itself is pretty self explanatory. It’s the feeling you get when going through the ten minute tutorial. It’s the underwhelming feeling once you realize the game only has one area to explore, coupled with less than a handful of unlockable characters. And, most of all, it’s the feeling you get when you realize you just wasted $9.99 on what is essentially an advertisement for the Havok Physics engine.
Where PAIN has faltered for me is in its ability to deliver a game-like experience — there’s just not much too it. You only have a few gameplay options, none of which are particularly enticing. Worst of all, is that the game seems built for downloadable content. The character select scene is already riddled with a “Buy Me” subtitle on a few of the options, and the barren stage select screen is just that — empty.
Of course, our opinion could drastically change. Check back in a few days for an extended write-up.
Outlook: Wait until it hits the virtual bargain bin. There’s a reason no demo was released.
