The firing of Jeff Gerstmann has finally been officially announced, though it wasn’t exactly a secret the last few days. Greg Brannan, CNET Networks Entertainment’s vice president of programming, stated flatly in the notice:
Neither CNET Networks nor GameSpot has ever allowed its advertising business to affect its editorial content. The accusations in the media that it has done so are unsubstantiated and untrue. Jeff’s departure stemmed from internal reasons unrelated to any buyer of advertising on GameSpot.
The notice praises Gerstmann’s decade-long tenure at GameSpot, but the entire thing leaves more questions than answers. It’s nice that they state that it wasn’t the Kane & Lynch review, but what in Sam Scratch happened that forced both parties to remain gagged? This situation is murky, at best.
Hopefully, GameSpot will survive remain healthy as one of the premiere review/news sites on the web after this bizarre adventure.

Who here is actually surprised that Gamespot did this? This site has always been about making money… just try wading through their site without getting bombarded with ads.
… never cared for ‘em…. and now… I am going to try and consciously stay away from them.

Oh, who cares about how they get ad revenue? They’ve always been top notch with their reviews and articles.

I also do not care that they make money off advertising.
My concerns are:
1. Fair employment practices.
2. Informative reviews with limited or no bias.
3. Easily browsed site.
Actually, Gamespot lost most of my attention awhile back. I can’t even remember why. Something about the site prevented me from using it effectively. If it wasn’t for all this kafuffle, I wouldn’t have gone there recently.

I only visit GameSpot to check the reviews, really, or when they have an exclusive article or interview.
