BioShock had won BAFTA and Spike TV’s Game of the Year Awards, but this time, Halo 3 grabbed the top prize as TIME Magazine called it the #1 Game of the Year:
Like a pebble that has been rounded over the centuries by the gentle splashing of the ocean waves, Halo 3 has become the perfect hardcore first-person combat simulator. By dint of painstaking labor on the part of its developer, Bungie, it has been refined over three installments to the point where it delivers only pure, unadulterated gaming bliss. Every combat is even-sided and complex and can be waged in multiple ways, using an arsenal of long- and short-range weapons, plus grenades and hand-to-hand moves. Every level is perfectly paced and balanced and graced with soaring architectural compositions. Plus it’s graphically gorgeous. The epic storyline and the stirring score don’t hurt either. In one of the greatest years video gaming has ever seen, Halo 3 is the very best of the bunch.
After Halo 3 came The Orange Box (#2), Rock Band (#3), Super Mario Galaxy (#4), BioShock (#5), Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (#6), The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass (#7), Mass Effect (#8), Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation (#9), and God of War II (#10).

As cool as Halo 3 was, I would think giving Call of Duty 4 the title of “Game of the Year” would have been much more fair. Just my opinion.
This just goes to show you that the folks at time have no clue about the gaming community.
BTW, wasn’t TIME magazine the one who had less than flattering words for this game a month before it came out? Hmm…. go figure.

I wouldn’t say that. Halo 3 is constantly evolving, having a healthy gaming community, the Forge, the single player campaign, the co-op multiplayer, the multiplayer, the music, the story.
And Rock Band is far better than CoD4.

As strange as it sounds, TIME has this one completely right. Halo 3 is great in that it can offer a completely different experience each time you play it. A month ago, I was already growing tired of the standard matches, but now Forge has given it a new life in the custom games lobbies.
