This Week’s Xbox Live Releases: Tempest and Sensible Soccer

This week’s Xbox Live Arcade titles are good ones: the classic arcade game Tempest and the legendary (in Europe) Sensible World of Soccer.
For those of you who didn’t like Space Giraffe (and want to anger Jeff Minter by buying “remakes of old, shite arcade games”), expecting it to be more like a next-gen Tempest, well, this version - while not being Minter’s Tempest 2000 - features some graphic updates, though, of course, without a paddle control, it’s not quite a real Tempest experience. Still, the gameplay has not aged one iota, being an older brother in terms of visuals of Geometry Wars Evolved.
Sensible Soccer is the Euro-equivalent of Earl Weaver Baseball/Front Page Sports: Football Pro in that it was the first to truly capture the spirit of the game, with AI and action. (It must be noted that EWB came out in 1987, FPS:FP came out in 1992, and Sensible came out in 1996.) Sensible features an actual career mode, noteworthy for an Xbox Live Arcade game - giving the game limitless replay value.
Sensible Soccer will cost 800 Microsoft Points, while Tempest will cost 400. (That’s $10 and $5 respectively in real world money.)

Sensible World of Soccer and Tempest on Xbox LIVE Arcade

Monday, while typically being renowned as the worst day of the week, is often times the most glorious day of the week for me as I get the pleasure of telling you all which games are coming out on Wednesday.
Today is an extra joyful occasion for me as Tempest, one of the games that really defined me as a gamer, is finally making its debut on Xbox LIVE Arcade. Adding to the joy is that this is really the first “true” port of the game (though you can play with enhanced graphics). Tempest had me pumping quarters into arcade machines in the early 80s with reckless abandon. It actually got to the point where I wrote a letter to Atari in 1983 begging them to release Tempest on the Atari 2600, and giving them a 5th grader’s best game design tips complete with drawings. Seriously, true story. And people wonder why I work in the game business…
Also coming out this week is Sensible World of Soccer, which has universally been hailed as one of the greatest soccer games of all time and was named one of the 10 most important games of all time by Stanford Professor Henry Lowood.
